TRAINING & EDUCATION

TRAINING

WorkSource offers financial assistance for a variety of training and education programs funded in whole or in part with federal, state or other public and private grant support. Financial assistance may be limited by the available funding rules, and scholarship opportunities are available through an application process. Training recipients will work with staff to develop a training plan that outlines the goals of the training. They will work with staff throughout the training to ensure training milestones are met. Below are the types of training opportunities available to WorkSource customers.
Occupational & Vocational Skills Training
This is a training program leading to an industry recognized degree or certificate. The training program is on an Oregon Eligible Training Provider List and approved by the local WorkSource office.

On-the-Job Training (OJT)
This is training provided by an employer where the trainee is hired as an employee of the company and receives a wage for the position during their training period. WorkSource Oregon works with the employer and trainee to develop a training plan which is designed to bring the trainee up to entry-level standards for the position.

Pre-Apprenticeship & Registered Apprenticeships
WorkSource partners with the Oregon Bureau of Labor Industries (BOLI) to prepare customers for, and assist with placement into, state recognized pre-apprenticeship programs and registered apprenticeship programs.

Work Experience/Internships (Paid or Unpaid)
This training prepares a participant for future employment and is reserved for people with limited work experience or those that are making career changes and have limited or no work experience in the target occupation. WorkSource staff work with the worksite supervisor to evaluate the trainee’s skill levels and design a work experience training plan which outlines the work to be performed by the trainee in a structured work environment.

Workforce Preparation
Many training programs and/or jobs require health and safety certifications prior to placement. WorkSource can assist with many certifications that require less than 40 hours of instruction and lead to a certification, including, but not limited to: flagger, forklift, CPR/first aid, OSHA 10/30, food handlers, or alcohol server.
Some WorkSource centers may offer workshops where you can learn more about training opportunities currently available.

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult Basic Education (ABE)
WorkSource staff can refer you to a program and may offer tuition assistance for ABE classes where curriculum is designed to improve your reading, writing or math skills to prepare you for vocational training or employment.

English as a Second Language (ESL)
WorkSource staff can refer you to a program and may offer tuition assistance for ESL classes where curriculum is designed to improve your understanding and use of the English language. Many WorkSource centers offer workshops for English Language Learners, too.

General Equivalency Degree (GED)
WorkSource staff can refer you to a GED preparation course and may be able to assist with tuition assistance for GED preparation or GED testing fees. Some WorkSource centers offer workshops that help you prepare for the GED.
