Be aware of imposters on job sites who are trying to scam job seekers:
  • Never share personal information, like your Social Security Number or banking information over the phone.
  • Do not accept anything that asks you to pay up front.
  • Ensure that emails you receive are coming from the job site you applied to. If it appears to come from a personal email, ensure their identity.
  • If you are sent a check to deposit before you’ve begun any work and pushed to do so before your job tasks are shared, do not cash in the check. This is a common scam where fake checks are created and then once deposited into your account, the check will bounce.
  • Do not purchase gift cards if asked as your first task. If you are asked to purchase gift cards with your own money and then asked to share the gift card numbers, this is a scam.
If anything ever feels off during your application or interview process, trust your gut. Online scams are quickly evolving and can sometimes be difficult to decipher.
